Sharon, tell us a little bit about yourself!
“With each passing day, I count my lucky stars for having been taken on by HHFL in 2010. This support has allowed me to display my hard work and discipline when it comes to my studies. Whenever I get the chance, I try to help my fellow peers work towards the same goals too. When I’m not studying, you’ll find me playing badminton, my favorite sport!”
What does going to College or University mean to you?
“My father was the breadwinner of the family. When he died in a road accident in 2007, I thought that I would never be able to fulfill my ambitions in life. Thanks to HHF, I was given the opportunity to finish my high school education with a B-. University is a dream that will open the doors to a better future for me and my family. There are no words to describe how much it means to me to fulfill this dream.”
What inspired you to choose your dream career path?
“Ever since I was a little girl, I had dreams of becoming an accountant. I’ve always been very good with numbers and calculations – I can’t imagine ever getting bored in a career that involves dealing with figures all day!”
Why do you deserve this opportunity?
“I deserve this opportunity on behalf of all the young girls in Kenya who are smart, talented and ambitious but who remain trapped in their homes, tending to family affairs, without the opportunity of education. HHF has been my beacon of hope – I am lucky and I know it. Now I want wings to fly and find success in a ‘man’s’ field, just because I can!”
If you could walk in someone else’s shoes for one day, who would you choose and why?
“Recently, we had a female motivational speaker come to HHFL to talk about finance and accounting. Boy was I impressed! It was truly inspiring to see a woman out there in the workforce doing a job that so many girls think is too “manly” or difficult. I would to walk in her shoes for a day and see firsthand the successes and challenges she faces as a working woman.”
