A trip to Mombasa gave these girls a memory to last a lifetime

Written by HHF grade 8 students, Diana, Sila and Elizabeth

We were informed about the educational tour on 31st of July. Classes six, seven and eight were supposed to go to visit Mombasa. Here at the project only the class eight were paid for the trip but I Elizabeth cried a lot and begged the manager to pay for me because I thought next year the school might go to another place and I did not want to miss the Mombasa tour.

When the manager paid for us the trip we were told what we were supposed to carry there in Mombasa. People were told to sleep at school that day so that the following day we could start our journey early. We started our journey at 7:00 a.m.

The place where we took our breakfast in a place called Mlolongo along Nairobi- Mombasa highway. When we reached Machakos we were put in another bus. We continued with our journey and we arrived at Mombasa at 4:00 a.m. On our way we saw wild animals, mountains and coconut trees. While we reached we got our new cookers had already cooked for us and we were served, and after that we were told to sleep for the remaining hours. We were so excited to visit that place because we thought that we could never get another chance to visit Mombasa.

We were told to dress in light clothes because there in Mombasa the temperature is high. Girls were wearing shorts, vests and sandals. Boys were wearing boxer shorts, vests and sandals. At night we used to cover ourselves with a bed sheet instead of heavy blankets that we use in Nairobi.

The main aim of me writing is to say thanks for giving me the chance to go and visit one the largest tourist sites in Kenya Mombassa. We were able to visit one of the oldest forts in the whole world the Fort Jesus. Allow me to give you a brief tour around the fort. Did you know that it was built in a human structure it was built by the Portuguese in the year 1498 that’s approximately two hundred years ago. Pretty long isn’t it?

We also visited the Indian Ocean and visited Diani beach there we had much fun and we got sea shells. The next day we were able to visit Bamburi cement factory the largest producer of  cement in Kenya after that we were able to visit the pirates beach where we had all the fun the third day we spent our day in the same beach not forgetting having crossed the Nyali Bridge.

We swam and had a lot of fun with our friends; we met so different people coming from that area and became good friends and they also taught us how to speak good Kiswahili. Our Nairobi Kiswahili is mixed with Sheng. It was really fun I just hoped that you were there not to worry if you have another chance of visiting Kenya you might go there and I can maybe join. We feel well for being given that chance to visit Mombasa for the first time in our lives.
