My Job at HighMark Construction Company

Written by James Kamau

I started working with HighMark Contruction in September 2014 after Baba Ted introduced me to Josh Knowles, a friend who manages a construction company.  I was able to secure a position and furthermore, Ted was able to secure another spot for Paul, a friend of mine.

My experience at the company has far surpassed all my expectations.  I have been building houses with a great team where I contribute by making marcela for the floor, mixing concrete for construction, roofing, electrical wiring, plumbing and others.  I have also been learning how to make tents and now I am an active player in the tent-making activities at the company.

Having qualified as an automotive engineer this year, I have been able to use my skills in the repair and maintenance of company vehicles including Josh’s.  This wide exposure is helping me to learn a lot. Josh has been very helpful in giving me extra practical skills beyond what I had learned in technical school.  He is so knowledgeable and I welcome all tips and suggestions he makes!

Working alongside Josh has not only taught be about the ‘ins and outs’ about construction business but about the business of life.  Josh is a very straightforward guy who expects his employees to be honest with at all times. I admire his emphasis on honesty both among his employees and to his customers.

This has been quite the experience!  I never thought I would work in a construction company, let alone meeting a boss who is so willing to mentor me. Josh tells me not to worry about not knowing how to do something.  “If you don’t know something, please ask me”, he tells me. An example is when he wanted me to dismantle the diskbrakes, remove the locks and be able to assemble them back again. I had never done it so he showed me and gave me another axle to work with on my own. I was able to fix that and I was happy. I think he liked it too and that has become part of my skill set.

At the moment we are on a two-week break before we head down to Masai Mara where the company is based at. I hear that we are going to be working most of the time in the tents construction and I can wait to show off my skills down there!

I know this has all been possible because of Baba Ted going of his way to help me. I will always be thankful to him for being so kind to me.
